Sara Antoinette Martin is a young artist based in Brooklyn, NY.
Sara’s female subjects are icons and deities, glorifying the anxiety and complexity of just being. Her work is a conversation of emotions and reflections of how she sees herself in this world and how the world sees her. Sara filters through her influences from traditional tattoo art, vintage swimsuits, Masonic symbolism, fins, gills and flowers, to create a unique visual language. More fascinated by the occult and religious imagery than believing in it, Sara is more interested in playing with the meaning of symbols then using them as they are historically intended.
For Sara, creating the image is just as much about the process as it is about the final product. In creating a piece, she paints the composition in separate parts on paper and collages them back together, essentially breaking down the composition and building it back up again, adding patterns and embellishment, until they climax into an epic mess of conflicted messages.
